In Ssisa, past the Gombolola headquarters, stands a small church built with bricks and mud. St. John's Namuzzi Church of Uganda was the place to be. On 30th August 2026, the Namirembe Diocese gazetted it as a Sunday School day.
Rev. Samuel Muwonge the parish priest of Kitende visited this Church and preached from Psalm 128 and urged parents to take their responsibilities seriously.
He addressed the issue of school meals, saying that if the government does not want children to pay for lunch, it should take over the schools and leave communities to run them. A hungry child cannot learn, he insisted, and Minister Balamu ought to understand that a child who is hungry cannot grasp what the teacher is saying. “We cannot allow our children to starve while they are trying to study,” he said. He welcomed the recent statement by the Bishops of Buganda: if the government does not want children to eat, it should take its buildings and leave parents and churches free to manage their own schools.
The goal today, he stressed, is for every child to receive an education that leads to work and a good life. Caring for children is the parents’ duty. Jesus Himself welcomed children and declared that the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Parents must therefore look after the souls of their children and give them a sound education. The greatest care of all is salvation.
Rev. Muwonge thanked the parents who brought their children to church. Too many Christians, he observed, come to worship and leave their children at home playing or scrolling on TikTok. He quoted Deuteronomy 6:6–8:
“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.”
He expressed surprise at the way some young people today dress and present themselves, and he reminded the congregation that Hannah taught her son, the prophet Samuel. Parents, he said, should read the Bible with their children every day. He asked the adults present when their children had last seen them reading Scripture. Children must be helped to hide God’s Word in their hearts.
Many young hearts, he noted, have been wounded by harsh words. Instead of criticising, parents should speak blessing over their children and proclaim victory in their lives.
